In 2014, Sally Below and Reiner Schmidt published the book ‘Towards the City as Campus’. City as Campus stands for an activating, knowledge-based urban development. The book presents projects by city makers and universities that have been implemented together with municipalities, educational and cultural institutions, initiatives, housing companies and players from the business world.

The City as Campus is a project for activating, knowledge-based urban development in everyday life. A nationwide network of city-makers and universities is working with local authorities, educational and cultural institutions, initiatives, real estate and housing companies, and stakeholders from the business world to show how the city can become a campus. The main locations are small and medium-sized towns and polycentric regions. On the way to the city as a campus, innovative design options, cooperative communities of responsibility, new business models, reflective urban societies and, last but not least, liveable cities are emerging. In the process, the actors cultivate the interplay between ‘established’ and ‘creative’ city makers across departmental boundaries: bottom-up and top-down come together. With practical examples and contributions from Ute Burkhardt-Bodenwinkler, Christopher Dell, Alexandra den Heijer, Martin Kohler, Mark Michaeli / Nadja Häupl, Sven Sappelt, Kai Vöckler / Heiner Blum and interviews with Frauke Burgdorff, Ulrich Hatzfeld, Christian Huttenloher, Stefan Krämer, Hilmar von Lojewski, Rudolf Scheuvens and many active members of the network

Auf dem Weg zur Stadt als Campus steht für eine aktivierende, wissensbasierte Stadtentwicklung im Alltag. Ein bundesweites Netzwerk von Stadtmachern und Hochschulen zeigt gemeinsam mit Kommunen, Bildungs- und Kulturträgern, Initiativen, Immobilien- und Wohnungsunternehmen sowie Akteuren aus der Wirtschaft, wie die Stadt zum Campus werden kann. Schauplätze sind in erster Linie Klein- und Mittelstädte sowie polyzentrale Regionen. Auf dem Weg zur Stadt als Campus entstehen innovative Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten, kooperative Verantwortungsgemeinschaften, neue Geschäftsmodelle, reflexive Stadtgesellschaften und nicht zuletzt lebenswerte Städte. Dabei kultivieren die Akteure das Zusammenspiel zwischen „etablierten” und „kreativen” Stadtmachern über Ressortgrenzen hinweg: bottom-up und top-down kommen zusammen.
