insights into the work with prospective students of the non-consecutive Master Programme Urban Design at HafenCity University Hamburg. it assembles the following contents: In the Round Table Redesign »Understanding UD«, the professors associated with the research and teaching programme UD negotiate possibilities and pitfalls of dealing with the object of the urban and the paradessences (paradox + essence) embedded therein (pro-discipline vs. post disciplinary, mobile vs. immobile, research vs. design, lecture theatre vs. rehearsal stage, etc.). We have also provided three key readings for you in the centre: a) in the very first (!) book »De architectura«, Vitruv showed that really good architects know how to deal with science and handicraft. b) Gottfried Sempers opus »The four elements of the art of building« issues an historical perspective of the origin of centralities. c) Keller Easterling and the Editorial Board of derive Zeitschrift für Stadtforschung were so kind as to allow the reprint of her text »The Action is the Form«. Here, Easterling argues that the Knowing How of the intervention-oriented fields allow actually superimposing one dispositive over another. Realising that we cannot escape the urban, this assessment enables us to design new futures and avenues towards the always emerging urban. The last pages are devoted to sundry impressions from the required UD course Transformations as live teach happening.
